Last exam season I messed up my sleep schedule. It got so bad that I became an insomniac. My bowels also revolted against me. My friend told me that this happened because I went in conflict with my biological clock. Thanks to my trust issues I embarked on a journey to find about this ‘biological clock’ myself. That landed me to this journal. I got to know that this biological clock actually exists, and I want to share what I learned. So, let’s get started.
What is Circadian Rhythm?
Circadian Rhythm is the government name of the biological clock I mentioned earlier. It is a biological clock that is built in our brain throughout the functionality of everyone’s day and night processes within a 24-hour clock frame and it devises our body to function in a healthy way of daily routines. It becomes a self-control system of human body to regulate our habits. For example, if you have a habit of eating at 8 am everyday then your body gets accustomed to doing bowel movement at around 8:30. This also means that this rhythm is different for everyone as we all have different habits.
What does it control?
Circadian rhythm is a control freak. It controls things like getting hungry, passing urine, blood pressure and even body temperature. Apart from these physical factors, it also controls mood of a person. Disruption of a synchronized circadian rhythm causes sleep issues. It can also worsen diabetes, depression etc. So, it pays to maintain your circadian rhythm properly.
How to Maintain Your Circadian rhythm.
You have to accept that you cannot escape the toxic relationship between you and your biological clock. So, you have to change the way you do things rather than expecting your Circadian rhythm to comply. Here are some things you do:
- During day, get blue/bright light exposure.
- During evening, avoid blue/bright light.
- Fix your sleep schedule and adhere to it.
- Do physical activities regularly.
- List Item
- Healthy and timely eating.
- Embrace seasonal changes.
Now that you know about Circadian rhythm, you should improve your relationship with it. Try to make a proper routine and stick to it every day. It sounds tiring and it actually is, but we can’t do anything about it, can we? So, if you are not interested in becoming a zombie during exam season then follow these tips. Thank you for your precious time and have a good day!
